It's hard to say BUT it may be scared, it may be hurt (if you touch a bruise a gerbil may cry, (my Vlad did after his last fight, every time I stroked his side he winced and cried, I've never heard his voice before in over 3 years!!!)), it may be a cry-baby gerbil (some pups seem to cry at ANYTHING).

My male gerbil happens to be a vocal gerbil. My family says that it should have been born a chick. It squeaks when I pick it up, but after that, it's fine. It just squeaks whenever I touch it. That's not all. It squeaks when it hits it's head/body on the side of the tank. He's really funny. I don't think he has a problem. Gerbils can squeak if they want to right? It's not involuntary?
