Yes gerbils can swim. When a pup fell in the water jug (see the drowning gerbil post) it swam very well till I fished out. Most mammals have a swimming instinct, horses, cats, rodents, but gerbils do NOT like getting soaked!!! It is also possible that a wet gerbil may becoem chilled.

They can swim, but they don't like it! ......I found this out when they were running around in my bath room! I heard some spleashing! One had climbed through a towel on the toilet and fell in it ;D! It was clean by the way!

Just for future reference, how can you dry off a gerbil without it getting a cold or sick?

Well my wet pup I just wrapped in kitchen towel to get it as dry as possible quickly and popped it back in the nest where its parents and siblings would keep it warm

I used a towel too, and after that I've placed him back in his tank. They he has enough bedding and nesting material to keep himself warm. And the tank is in my living room, where it is also warm!
