Ginger is a one year old gerbil. She's lively when in her tank, but whenever I pick her up, she gets all relaxed. I've heard that gerbils have high energy and are NOT lap pets, but Ginger lets me pet her for long periods of time and sits still when out of her cage. Once she's in her cage, she can go WILD! Also, she seems to be potty trained in some way. She has never peed/pooped out of her tank. What is happening here? Why is she like this? ANyone else notice this in gerbils?

My Mongolian gerbils are quite lively, inside and outside their tanks. They won't sit still on my lap to be pet.
Only some of my fat-tailed gerbils do this!

Mine are very lively, both in and out of the tank. I wish they would sit still a little bit so I can pet them, but they don't have time for that! Too much exploring to do!

Since all my gerbils are a year and younger I find they are all super hyper, only a couple will sit and climb on my sholders without trying to hop off. But my last female pair once they were older I could hold and cuddle them no problems, they were quite affectionet. SO I think alot has to do with age and taming.
