I know that this is a way of showing dominance, but I think it's different this time. Keebler (dad of 2 litters, 3rd on the way) is mounting Gizmo (one of his cage mates) Gizmo is a boy, and Keebler tries to mount him... but not the other cage mate Blitz, who's also a boy. Gizmo doesn't pick fights, and he's really friendly, but Keebler insists of mounting him anyway. Once I'm pretty sure that his little gerbil-self was poking out too. He chases Gizmo just like how he chase Ritzie! Even right now, I put Keebler's 4 son's in a clean tank with Blitz, Gizmo and Keebler. And Keebler sniffed the pups, and tried to mount Gizmo. Also, I think something is wrong with Gizmo's left teste. There was a sore on it, and now it's just a bump scab sort of thing. It's not like a regular scab (maybe because of where it's at.....?) But also, the other day when I picked him it, I checked it, and there was a spot on it that was wet. It wasn't pee. His pee is yellow, and this was very clear, with a tint of white, but it was right between the two, and he flinched when I wiped it up with a tissue, and he doesn't squirm when I touch there (to check his sore). SO I was just wondering.... Could his sore have anything to do with it?

Yes, because a change in another gerbil's smell will make the dominant gerbil want to make sure that "strange" gerbil knows its place, and heck, it might even mistake the smell of fluids "down there" for a girl in heat! Who knows the world of gerbil smells!

I guess it could be, but really it is hard to tell. Gizmo is looking better down there... you really have to look to see his sore now. I know it's there, but that's because I already know about it!

Hey Ritzie,
If Keebler is mounting Gizmo and Gizmo has a sore on his testes, then it might be because Keebler bit him. The clear fluid might actually be white blood cells or puss. Are there any other signs of biting? Have you witnessed any other signs of aggression? Chasing, squeaking?
I would keep an eye on the both of them just to make sure. If this continues, you might want to separate them. It surely can't be comfortable for Gizmo to be continually harassed and mounted by Keebler.

It's not so much that Keelber is agressive. Keebler does NOT pin Gizmo down or anything, he just mounts him. Also, I don't think Keebler bit. The only thing he's ever bitten was my rings. But anyway, Gizmo had that scabby sore when I got him from the pet store. Also, he's missing some of his tail. I'm guessing he had an accident while there. It's all healed over, but it's like an inch shorter than everyone' elses! He's also not swollen down there, but puss is always a possibility. I'd never thought of that. Keebler and Gizmo (and the other 5 boys) all sleep in a pile, Plus, Keebler has been mounting less, that I've noticed. I haven't seen him do it in a few days.

What beauties you have Ritzie I am sorry to hear that he was like that from the pet store but it is good that Keebler did not inflict the wounds. If you recently got him from a pet store, it is probably dominance like you thought. Since he is mounting Gizmo less, they have probably worked out the pecking order. Remember when the pups get 5-8 months (sexual maturity = adolescense), they may begin fighting for dominance. I am confident that you will keep an eye on them and trust you will handle anything that comes up.

The little ones are 4 1/2 weeeks, and I've noticed a LITTLE scuffle now and then, but they know that their daddy is boss! Soon I'm going to get one of those 3 level wire cage toppers that fits on a 10gal. That'll give them lost of room, and they should love it. Plus, then they can have extra bedding! ;D

It'll probably be like a month before I get it. It depends on the pay check. I'm trying to save for my VERY OWN PLACE! ;D
