I’m just wondering about the vocalizations my female gerbil Sam is making. She makes these peeping sounds at my male Orlando sometimes. She would do this when they first started to mate about a week ago and then would eventually allow him to mate. They aren’t mating any more but I keep hearing Sam peeping sometimes for what seems to be no apparently reason. Ill hear her making a fuss and Orlando will be running on his wheel. But then gerbils are fast movers, who know what he was doing a second before I check on them.
She seems to peep at him while he’s running around and active and comes in her direction. There is no fighting at all they just seem playful and active. Do female often make sounds like this to their cage mates? Could she just be complaining a bit now because she pregnant?
Just wondering.. Thanks.

Female gerbils are much more vocal then males. My females like 'talking'. Though I've never heard a peep from my older males.

chirping is their way of communicating, as they mature their voices raise in pitch and it's harder for humans to hear them. But Sometimes females to make a high pitched squeak sound at males when they are 'warning' them to stay away from something. I had an intro with an older female and younger male, she would run at him and squeak, keeping him away from a certain jar. they settled down eventually, but I kept a close eye on them for any signs of increased tensions.
lol, just the opposite for me, I've never heard my girls make noise, but the boy tank (6 months-1 year) are constantly squeaking and complaining to one another, always vying for the warmest spot in the nest and grooming one another. The make more racket then the pups do!! ;D

Mine are like Cal's, one of my boys squeak but not any of the others.
Bandit did box and move around for the first few months and was successful in keeping Honeymunch from mounting her. She delayed her first pregnancy for several months.
