Advice please! I woke up this morning to find two of my gerbs very bloody. I have three 7-month old sisters (same litter). I was a little worried about the dominant one (Sam) and the least dominant one (Smat) not getting along because Smat would resist all of Sam's attempts to show dominance (mount her etc.). But the fight wasn't even between them. It was between the other sister Marty and Smat. Maybe they were fighting to see who would rank 2nd???) I separated them immediately, and now Smat is by herself and seems depressed. I know they are at that nasty age, but they were all sleeping together and Marty and Smat seemed to be getting along just fine. With this kind of de-clanning and after such a vicious fight, is there any chance that a split cage is going to get them reunited? I'm afraid to try it because they seemed fine before the fight, so how will i know when and if i can remove the barrier? I'm worried that i will think everything is fine between them and then come home and find one dead. Has anyone had a similar situation? Also, how do you hold the gerbs still long enough to put the antibiotic cream on them?! They will sit in my hand just fine, but become incredibly hard to hold when i try to put the cream on, and short of squeezing them too tightly, i don't know what to do.

For the cream: where are the bites? if possible, you can hold them by the very base of the tail or scruff them.
I think a split cage MIGHT work. I'm not sure though. you might be better off getting a young one to introduce to her. I presume you seperated the right one- was Smat the bully? because if Marty was, then a fight could break out between her and Sam.

Hello Tasha,
I have heard of some being successful and others not as successful. Some of the ones that were successful, only lasted for a while after before it happened again.
Sam is the dominant and she is with Marty. I would keep an eye on them but they should be fine now that Smat is not there.
Smat might be better off with a young pup llike Lizzy suggested.
Also scruffing the gerbil will allow more control, but as Lizzy said either will work.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks, i didn't think about scruffing. I really don't know who started the fight because they seem to have been getting along until this morning. I thought it best to leave Marty with Sam because Sam and Smat have been doing a lot of chasing lately. I expected those two to have a problem if any of them did... I'm not sure what to do because my gut feeling is that they aren't going to get along again in the future and i will be afraid to leave them alone again. Maybe i can leave them in a permanently split cage? The tank is 30 gallons and I can give them separate turns in their playpen tank. This is so upsetting!
