I just come to see that two of the brothers have been in a fight with each other. They were fine around 4PM as Teddy was sleeping ontop of Squirt and Max. Everything was still fine around 6. And then around 9PM, I saw Teddy all by himself and bloody. Squirt was fine so I fractically looked for Max who I found and was also bloody. So is this what declaning is? We've cleaned up Teddy and Max the best we could. The wounds look bad, but they are not bleeding. Teddy looks like he got it the worst and so now I've put them into a split cage. I have Max by himself on one side while Teddy is with Squirt. What else should/can I do? Here are some pics of the battle wounds: Max- Max again- Teddy- Teddy- Teddy again- Thanx for any advice, Cindy

Yes they have declanned best thing for now is leave them as they are and watch the wounds. So long as none are infected they should heal fine so don't panic. It is improbable that you can reunite them but as they are presently split its worth leaving them a while and see how they react to each other.

Hey Cinny,
I am sorry to hear about the declanning!! It is sad to see. I hope that things work out for every one involved. You could try to reunite them but it may also end up the same as it is now. It's your call. You do have other gerbils that you might pair Max up with correct?

Hello Sweetie! Well, I am throughly confused right now. For the past hour, I've been watching Max and Teddy together and I've witnessed them cleaning each other and sleeping together. I'm fixing to go to bed shortly and so I think I will go ahead and split cage them again for another night. I just don't wanna chance it, ya know what I mean? I will have more time tomorrow to see what happens. And honestly, I do not have anybody else to pair up with Max if it came down to that. Billy and Bobby are already set with Bobby being the dominate one. And then there's Timmy and Buddy and we all know about Timmy and Buddy. I don't think I want to put him in with Peaches and Sally. I guess if it came down to it, I'd find a buy a baby gerb to pair up with Max so that he wouldn't be alone. In the meantime, I'm just confused. Here is a recent pic of Max and Teddy-

Wow, Cinny, sorry to hear it. So, you put Max and Teddy back together and they did OK? Are they still together and getting along alright? RW

I put them back into the connected 10 gallon tanks (one side to sleep in and the other one is the playground) and I've been observing them now for 2 hours now. They checked each other out, Max groomed Teddy, they scuffled a bit and now they are together sleepin in their tunnel. I'm getting ready to eat dinner so I hope everything will be okay. *crosses fingers*
From what I understand, once gerbils declan, they don't go back to each other. *scratches head* I'm so confused!

Well gerbils are all different, liek people, and I wouldnt assume any hard and fast rules on these issues. The problem is their personalities will not have changed, but if the declanning was triggered by an illness or weakness in the more dominant animal maybe its sorted itself out? I certainly think they need careful observation for the tiem being. I woudl suggest remove one tank. Two tanks give an opportunity for them to develop their own territories, a common cause of declanning. Since they've declanned once the chances are high they may do so again and anything which may contribute to that should be eliminated.

Sounds logical to me. Alright then, I shall put them all back into the 20 gallon long tank and see what happens from there.

I'd also keep any tank accessories to a minimum for right now--water bottle, plenty of chewies, and just toilet paper or paper towels for nesting.

Wow, I'm glad you got some replies. It was VERY distressing to me when i posted a message to ask for help about a similar situation and didn't get a single response... I wish you luck with split-caging. I think it may be more difficult to introduce one back with two others, but i'm not sure because no one wanted to offer advice. (See "Now the other two are fighting!")

Hi Tasha! I'm sorry to hear about your gerbies fighting. I agree with you that it is distressing when something like this happens. I didn't sleep well the night I found Max and Teddy bloody. I hope the replies in this thread maybe have helped you some. What I did when I split caged my three last week was to swap the gerbils fromeach side so they could smell each others scents. *knocks on wood* They have been fine since I put them back together on Friday night. I'm sure you will get some replies to your post. Just give it some time. Keep us posted with your gerbies. Good luck! Cindy
