My gerbil, Patrick, winks at me every so often. I've read that it can be a sign of contentment. I hope so! I've also noticed that if I let him look in the mirror, he always winks. It's so cute! I wonder if he thinks it's another gerbil in there. Or maybe he just likes looking at himself! ;D I haven't ever seen Daryl do it, though. Do many of you see your gerbils wink?

Mine have never really winked. I think my Rody did a few times, but not anymore. ;D

Yes, several of mine have! But my fat-tailed gerbils do this a lot! Always when I have them in my hand and look to them. Most of the times it are the ones that are not very tame. Like they are saying, I know you don't harm me! ;D
But all my fat-tailed gerbils wink back after I winked first. One time even three at the same time, when I had all three in my hand. Is quite funny. This is not with my Mongolian gerbils. But they have done it.

winking is a major form of gerbil communication so your gerbil is taling to you and yes if you wink to him he will respond

I have winking conversations with both of my gerbies, Hendrix more so than Harrison as young Harry is a bit anti-social. It's v.cute, my partner and I will sit in front of their tank for hours just winking at them, most of the time the gerbies just look at us like we're idiots but some times we get a responce.

Funny story >> I picked one of my gerbils up a minute ago, Battle, and started winking at her to test it out. Then she winked back a couple of times! It was super cute! But then.. She started grinding her teeth together, and I think that means she's mad.. So did I communicate something bad to her? lol ;D

Hey, I might not be an expert, but my gerbils usually grind their teeth together when they're hungry or have just chewed my jumper I don't think it means they are angry.... I think that's portrayed by biting and stamping their hindlegs(though that's for a lot of other things too )
