I bought these tubes from Petsmart the brand is Super Pet CritterTrail. The insides of the tubes have a “ridging” in them to help the rodent climb through, the problem is though that my gerbils constantly sit in the tube ways chewing these ridges apart and its really annoying,
Can you make any suggestions to get them to stop, ex, better tubing? Some kind of spray to use like bitter apple or something safe but nasty tasting?

I don't think there's anything you can do. You could try the bitter apple stuff, I know mine won't eat Granny Smith Apples, and those are sour. If it works, let me know, but I can't think of anything else that might work....

I don't think there is anything you can do. I would be affraid to put anything on the tubes, whether it be bitter apple spray or lemon juice. I would be affriad of them getting it into there eyes, or it just be to potent for there little lungs, specailly in a closed space like the tubes.
It may be something you will have to remove if they end up chewing through, or hurting themselves with. I had to do that when one of my pairs demolish a plastic wheel, they only get wood and metal in there cage now.

Yup, I agree. Gerbils are chewers and once they've found something they think is entertaining to gnaw on, good luck with getting them to stop. The only sure way I know of is to take away whatever you don't want them to chew.
I tried Bitter Apple spray a long time ago, with one of my first gerbils who was a dedicated chewer. She loved it, thought it was the best thing she'd ever tasted, even yummier than what I sprayed it on to get her to stop chewing. Of course, that was my Ratzilla and she was somewhat...strange.

Well whats a good alternative tubing system so I can set up different cages together? something they wont be able to chew but can still climb through easily?

you could bet some pvc pipes (ones that will fit gerbils easily) and put tabasco sauce on the entrace and exit edges so they wont chew on that, but it may be difficult for them to travel through them because ther's no ridges... you may be able to cut notches in the bottoms so they can grip that but I can't think of anything else

Hmm I could line one side with a tin wire mesh for them to grip if I use the PVC pips.

the rotastak tubes don't have ridges, and you can get metal chew protectors to put on the ends.

My gerbils have tube caging, and I also use Super Pet Critter Trail. But, there is sort of a solution. Use S.A.M. tubes. The ridges are smaller, and more unchewable, but still climbable! This worked for me! Melanie

Weird. My femakes actually love Granny Smith Apples. Once I tried using Apple Cider Vinegar on the water bottle holder/guard and that didn't stop them from chewing on it. I actually think it made them chew it more.
Unless you can get some kind of metal PVC pipe.. I have a hard ..plastic? one and one of mine has been working on it for a while and chewed a hole right down to the middle of it. He's a really unusually, aggressive chewer though. He rather chew that than cardboard or wood.
What about lininig the inside of the tubes with something? Some kind of hardware cloth maybe that they can still climb up but not really chew through?
