One of my gerbils has been more shy and slightly fatter then the other one(Ive had them about 3 weeks now) but this last week shes been really really skittish and lazy. In fact right now shes laid down right next to the water bottle instead of her nest. Is this weird? Should I be worried? She seems to be breathing fine, what other symptoms should I watch for?

Does she look healthy; you know clear eyes, nose, shiny fur and what not? If thats the case then I have two idea as to what "could" be going on. 1. Shes pregnant.. 2. Was it hot the past few days shes been like this? I had a few really hot days in a row and we didnt have the AC in yet. I noticed my gerbils acting the same way, they would sprawl themselves out flat in a odd corner or onto of one of their wooden platforms as if trying to cool off and acted a bit more lazily. If she otherwise appears healthy and is eating drinking and going to the bathroom id just keep a close eye on her. If anything else is unusual you may want to take her to a vets. If you think it may be that shes hot try adding a nice rock in the cage, they generally keep cooler temperatures and might be nice to lay on. And maybe try putting the cage in a cooler area. If shes pregnant , well youll find out soon enough

She defiantely seems healthy to me no runny nose , nice fur and clear eyes. As for the heat we've had some hot days but we've also been running the AC and kept it cool inhere but maybe their tank is warmer. What kind of rocks are good to put in to help keep them cool? She shouldnt be pregnant they are both suppose to be girls but if thats the case we will soon see. -M

Any rocks will do, I live in Connecticut so there are tons of small flat rocks, Just find something with a large enough surface to lay on, and something that wont easily roll around. Give it a good wash with water and if you a more paranoid you can try and boil it in water for a few minutes. You may have two females but you said you had this one for three weeks she could have gotten pregnant before you bought her.. Never know. And thats kind of thing happened all the time

Well no babies yet so shes probably not pregnant. I think she just likes to dose on the side of the tank while waiting for her turn on the wheel

Some gerbils have a natural tendency to be come fatter than the others without the partners suffering.
o.O Yours use the wheel?! Mine do everything they can to avoid running on it!!! They used it as a hammock, as a seat, as a moving table, something to chew, well really anything BUT use it for exercise. Perhaps they need a Hamster to show them what to do with it!

My gerbils have never even attempted to run in a wheel...i was kinda upset since i paid for it and all but they chewed out the bottomw rungs after about 3 weeks of it just sitting there and now use it as their super secret escape route. its rather funny.

They both do use the wheel, sometimes at the same time flinging the other off lol I think after having them for awhile I think the one just likes to lounge around sometimes.
