My patience paid off. I just kept sticking my hand in the cage, even if they wouldn't come out and finally today, they both did and not only did they just grab a treat and run, but they crawled all over my hand and even sat on it while they ate for a bit. They also no longer run and hide when they see me coming near the cage or seem nearly as skiddish about noises and movement around them.
I also tried putting my hand in without any treat and Carl came and sat on my hand and cleaned himself.
I really think that the fact that they have each other made the difference. Before Carl came along, Lorraine was a hermit...always in her bed. But, now they are both out and playing in the tubes, running in the wheel, burrowing. It's such a joy to watch them.
I think that on Saturday I will get them out, put them in the play area and see if they are interested in a sand bath.
