On monday I started doing some gerbil intros with some new gerbils I bought. One pair is a young male and female about the same age, and after just 1 day they are getting along just wonderful! They've slept together groom each other, etc...
The second pair, is an older male and a yonger female. I don't know the age difference, but it may be 3 months. The male is a lot bigger than the female. They are doing so-so. The male is of course bigger and dominate so he parades around the tank rubbing on everything while the younger female stays out of his way. They greet each other and haven't attacked each other, but they have not slept together yet. When they hear a noise and get starteld they do sit next to each other. I'm still doing a split cage with them. Let them spend time together and apart but they are always in the same tank. I'm just a bit nervous about leaving them together alone. I'm going to give it a few more days of course. Do you think this is so far pretty normal?
And finally, I have my third pair which are two females. Earlier this month I posted about how they fought and drew blood from each other. I have them in a divided 10 gal. tank. Thre is a gap between the wire cover and the top of the divider. And, to my surprise, yesterday I got home and one of the females had squeezed herself into the other side of the tank. Both girls were sitting next to each other, greeting and doing normal gerbily things. I separated them though for fear they would fight again.
Today, I put them both in a neutral new tank and they hung out together and seemed comfortable with each other. Should I let these two live together again or is there a good chance that they'll fight.
Also, on Monday, I got new gerbils, now I have 8 total in one room. Do you think them smelling the other gerbils will help them get along now???
