Hi, My 3 year old gerbil was suddenly very lethargic, eyes closed, limp, panting Tuesday night I thought he would sadly have died overnight however yesterday he was up and about eating and drinking.however today he seems to be having constant seizures, rolling over and over and lying with his legs in the air upside down with the heavy breathing again then lying ver still upside down or in a strange position !! Can anyone shed any light please?

Hi there.
I'm so sorry that your gerbil is ill. Under the circumstances, due to his age, this is usually when gerbils start to go downhill, health-wise. I highly recommend taking him to the vet, if you haven't already so that they can properly diagnose what's going on. I think a lot of people on here could probably give you a good idea of what's wrong, but the problem is that a lot of symptoms are the same for many illnesses. If he's eating and drinking, that's really great, try to keep him on food. Is he losing any weight, or gaining any? It's the panting and seizures that seem most strange to me...
Hopefully someone more experienced can help further, best of luck to you two

Hello,
I'm also sorry to hear your gerbil is unwell.
It's usually very difficult to pinpoint exactly what's wrong with gerbils, but it's possible something has happened to his brain to cause the recurrent seizures, such as a stroke. I would agree that a vet visit is probably a good idea. They may be suggest possible causes and possibly offer treatment but the most important thing would be to assess his quality of life, especially if he doesn't show any improvement soon. He might be struggling with balance and coordination if he's rolling onto his back.

Please stick to one thread for the same problem with the same gerbil (I can see your email address is the same as anni6578), keeps all the info in one place then, making it easier for everyone . Also, please don't create 2 accounts for one person. Or if 2 different people in your household, please use 2 different email addresses.
