i gave my gerbils some cabbage the other night (only 1 tiny peice) Is this ok if given rarely as treats?

mine love cabbage and lettuce
but they are quite 'wet' so only in very small amounts and not more than once or twice a week
lettuce is really a big no no but they do love it!!!

gerbils are desert animals, adapted to an environemtn of very little water. They are able to cope with a very dry diet but too much wet vegetation may make them unwell. Lettuce is almost entirely water and is not recommended for any rodents.

My boys like veggies (carrots, broccoli) and my girls like fruits (apples, blueberries). They all like the seeds in the fruits (watermelon seeds, pumpkin seeds, apple seeds). They also like yogurt, crickets, grasshoppers, and pine nuts.

wow can gerbils eat yoghurt? Does it have to be a certain type?

with milk products it is the same as with the cabbage - you shouldn't give too much of it to your gerbils because it will mess up their digestive system. but there are yoghurt drops available at stores, my gerbilslove them  |

I haven't tried the yogurt drops since they have not eaten any other treats I have bought them. I like to stick to the fresh stuff. I gave mine a little bit in a tiny lid. I put it on the floor during free roam time. Some came over and ate a bit others where more interested in playing. I would not give it to them in the tanks unless you are going to monitor it and take it out soon afterwards. This way is won't get in the shavings and mold. Frost bite, I love the dragon!  |

Hello -- i'm new here
Just read one of the posts about feeding fruit seeds and it set off some warning bells because I was told once that apple seeds contain small amounts of arsenic and should never be fed to animals. Has anyone else heard of this?

That is indeed true! Apple seeds are indeed toxic, not only for small rodents, but for all animals as far as I know, including humans.  Only you can imagine that a small animals will be affected more than large animals like us! |

I tried giving my gerbil those yougart drops, he wont touch them. I took a little peice off and tried to feed him that but I don't think he thinks it's food, he wont even try it. Same with these dried up banana treats I got. I figured it was a gerbil thing but someone else previously said their gerbil loves the yougart drops. Guess my guy just doesn't like them. Maybe my new baby will.

not all gerbils like them
some prefer milk drops, others choc drops
also they may be suspicious of new strange tastes
but mainly i find adults like choc and youghurt drops but pups aren't so keen
