At the time this list was stickied it was a useful guide but it does contain some things unsuitable for gerbils. Ed has posted this link on GSUK to a preview of his new website and I would certainly recommend all gerbil owners to read it. It's quite long and text-heavy so do take your time and maybe even come back later and reread so you don't miss things! I know I will www.sensi-media.com/gerbil/domestic.htm ;D This is EXCELLENT. I'm looking forward to reading more. Please keep us posted!

Could someone please update the original list, the original author or maybe a moderator, so that people when they come to see the list won't have to search all the messages and maybe make a wrong choice of food, since this is a post it thread. Thank you Theo,

Actually I would suggest unstickying it and stickying a thread with Eds link.

That would be good! As we all try new things on our gerbies that are safe it would be a good idea to add them to the list Caroline

What about magnolia tree branches (pink flowered ones without leaves or flowers)? Are they okay, because I have one in my backyard and I think my gerbs are kind of bored sometimes.

Can I just ask if and how people use millet? I've just bought one sprig (about 8inches long) as I've heard it's good for their coats. How much do you give yours? And do you just leave it in the tank or do you hang it from somewhere? Thanks

Mine get an inch once a week to share (between 2) and that certainly keeps their coats shiny ;D they love it too!
If I don't have a sprig I just put 1 teaspoon in their food bowl once a week.

Something I thought I'd toss out that mine like: fruity organic baby food.
A while back, I had to give mine some medicine by eyedropper and it was pretty frustrating for both me and the gerbil. One of the technicians at my vet's office suggested trying baby food and it worked like a charm. Just dip a spoon in, use a toothpick to mix the medicine into whatever sticks to the spoon, wipe off the back of the spoon so litter doesn't stick as easily (and so they don't get diarrhea from too much fruit) and give it to the little guys.
My boys thought apples were alright, but loved peaches. They couldn't get enough and one still goes crazy whenever he sees a spoon.

Just a quick note to 'sfgerbils' from her post on the 22nd June about kidney beans. Well, I guess it's the same as with us humans - raw kidney beans are poisonous to us too. There's a chemical in them that only disperses with cooking. I don't think it is in other beans/pulses.
