There is normally a lot more bedding, just wanted to show how it looks underneath it! The plastic bowl is just a play time sandbowl, I DO NOT leave it in the cage, they will chew the plastic. Oh ya, and I used kool-aid to paint the wood!

Hi all!! Here is a picture of Snowball and Nugget's home!! My husband built it similar to a cage that he had his own gerbils in when he was young!! The main floor has their wheel, water bottle, mineral lick, a few inches of CritterCare bedding, some Prairie Hay, a terracotta pot that they love scratching in and cardboard tubes to shred/climb on. The back of it has a ramp that leads up to the second floor. Upstairs in their loft is there dust bowl (that they use as a toilet), more tubes, a critter igloo that they sometimes snooze in, their food bowls and the typical small animal climbers that they are chewing to bits.

My pairs' 55 gallon: They've built a tunnel system from end to end and never really use the wheel anymore. How did you manage to get the wheel on the side of the tank?

The boys new home Firstly guys a massive thanks to everyone who's posted their own set ups, I think I've read through every single one as we were preparing to get our own gerbils! Secondly I thought I'd show you what we've ended up with. I knew I wanted a large aquarium, preferably with an equally big topper, and I got extremely lucky as I found the perfect combination on eBay (for £35!) sold by a guy who had clearly been a very caring gerbil keeper himself. Next I knew I wanted it to be raised off the floor, so I decided to build a base unit, partly for height, partly for storage and partly to ensure that the tank was totally secure. Next I built a new level between the tank and the topper with two large holes in it to allow the gerbils to move between the tank and the topper. Then I went a bit crazy on Zooplus.co.uk and bought a whole load of bridges and accessories (seriously, I couldn't fit them all in the tank!) Last I filled up about 6" with wood chips and added some timothy hay and shredded toilet paper - I'm going to increase the depth once they've had a chance to find their little paws and settle in.. I don't want them to disappear underground as soon as they arrive.. So, here you go... And yes, the boys have just arrived, and yes, they seem to be enjoying themselves!

Wow T0m! That is beyond amazing for a set up. It is what I imagined doing with my own but never did and don't have the room for now! I'm envious (as I know Evie would be too if she saw that palace compared to her apartment! lol)
Very VERY well done!

We're fortunate to have the space and I got really lucky with the tank and topper from eBay. It's great to see them enjoying the space, I just wish they were awake at the same time as us!

I have seen gerbil heaven Went out today and got a few new pieces to help give height variation to the tank and keep the sandbath off the bedding and kept cleaner. We bought the kind of safe glue used for aquariums so if in the future we want to add permanent fixtures we can do so. Right now we have a medium sized wood hut with a bendable wood bridge turned into a ladder. There's three wood tubes of various sizes, the largest one is buried in the bedding to create a tunnel There are eggplant shaped wood chews scattered about, a faux wood-styled chew log with hay and honey seeds, and alfalfa hay bedding. We have more pieces that are not in the tank right now, I wanted to change it up and rearrange things to make it interesting for them. The tank is 29 gallons! So we have a fair good amount of space to organize things a number of ways. For those curious, the light on top is a reptile heat lamp fitted with a regular bulb. I live in Michigan where it's been horrendously cold, so they have the lamp to keep them toasty warm. They will also be given more bedding, I was hesitant to experiment too much while Atlas' paw has been healing so when he's in the all clear I'll be getting a few more inches in there.
