Do 6-7 weeks old gerbil 'bits' look more like the adults or more like the pups?
I'm picking up a couple of little 'uns in a few days, and although I'm sure the breeder is responsible etc I've never got gerbs from her before. So, obviously I want to be checking the sex myself rather than blindly trusting someone I don't know!

The picture are a good size, but they're pretty blurry. Is there any way that you could move the camera away from the gerbils so it could focus better, and then crop the picture? Nicole

Hi All, newbie to the boards and a newbie to the gerbil world! This is my first time owning gerbils - up till now I've only raised hamsters. I just got a pair of gerbils last week and I love them to bits. The only thing that concerns me is that two people at the petshop confirmed that both of the gerbils that I purchased were male. They get along fine but tonight it looked like one was mounting the other. You probably get this question a lot... I think I just need a second opinion on this. Even after looking at pictures on the internet for the differences on male and female gerbils, I'm still kind of confused. I know my other gerbil is definitely a male because he has very obvious testicles. But the other one is a little younger and after I saw what looked like mating, I got concerned about getting an unexpected litter. I was even considering on taking my gerbil to the vet to be absolutely sure of the gender. Too bad its the weekend and the vet is closed... so I'll leave it to the gerbil experts in the forum for now. I took pictures of Sharkey, the mystery gender gerbil. I hope these are clear enough for you. Would you be able to help? Thanks a million.

She's a girl, and it does look like if you saw mating, pups are on the way. Have a look at the breeding threads, especially the tagged ones. I also have a breeding page: www.geocities.com/cvaneysinga/birth.htmlGestation is 25 days. Good luck! PS since the pet shop made the error, you have every right to take the girl back and get a boy from them. Notify them that because of their error, she's probably pregnant, and it is therefore their problem.

I"m sorry to have to tell you this- but you'd better start a split cage now... or get a second cage- because (unless this gerbils is *very* young) she's a girl. Also, a good indicator between mating and dominance mounting is this... the male will clean himself after he tries to mate. He cleans himself every time. Also, if he's mounting a female, she's bend herself funny to make her genitals more "available" for him to reach. And of course if he actually mates her, then she'll clean herself as well. Good job for being concerned and double checking! That's quite responsible! Also, WELCOME to the forum! I hope you find it helpful! And we love pictures! But... you got any besides these.... lol ;D

I didn't realize how quick the mating was. The internet says its quick and they mean QUICK! It happens like a second and then it seems to be over - She might be a little too young because she kept running away. I'll cross my fingers that I don't get a litter, but I'd also be happy with pups As soon as I saw them mating, I separated them and then took the above pictures. lol speaking of pictures, I have more than just Sharkey's naughty bits: Sharkey the GIRL on the left. and Vex on the right (the father??) ;D Thanks again everyone!!

I actually googled that same page looking for information on what mating looks like. Great page by the way. Very informative! I think I might just keep the girl. I'm already kind of attached to her I also have the space and time to care for them if she does have pups.

Its time for that game again! Guess the sex I got a new gerbil today!! Total cutie! I'm almost positive that its a female but what's throwing me off is that the genitals seem to be a bit dark for an argente. Not sure how old it is. I got it from the petshop and I'm guessing between 6-10 weeks old. Female or late-blooming male? Please help. Thanks ;D and just so this post isn't all about naughty bits... here is what my new gerbil looks like!!
