k, so I was at STUPID Petsmart and of course they're selling two sisters and not trying to have the lady buy the last third sister, so I trried to get her to so that the third wouldn't be left alone but she didnt want to even after I said it could die alone. this gerbil is about 3 weeks younger then Abby and Tessa and its a female too, is there any way I can introduce this gerbil to mine without mine killing it?? Or are they just gonna hate it from the beginning?? I feel so bad for her, and she;s a BEAUTIFUL jet black one too!! can I have her cause I got a 55 gallon aquarium for them today, so theres lots of room...

Hi Brittanie,
I have tried to do the same thing, I got a single gerbil (about 13 weeks old) from the SPCA because I felt so bad about her being alone, and tried to introduce her slowly to my older pair of females. But no luck, it just doesn't work and isn't safe for the gerbils. So now she is alone with me, which I still think is better than alone at the SPCA, but she has no gerbil company. The only option now is to find another single female gerbil and pair them up. Don't try to put her with your others!

Do you have any idea how old she is?? Is she much smaller than the others?
If she's under 8 weeks, you could probably do it without a split cage. I once introduced a lone adult female to 2pups instantly. The 2 pups were only about 4-5 weeks old so that's why it worked so easy with no split cage.
Do you know which one of your gerbils is the dominat one? Maybe try taking the one who isn't dominant and introduce them on neutrual ground to see what happens. (If she gets all maternal on her like mine did.. then that's great)
Or safest thing would be trying the split cage method and see what happens.
I know there was another post on here..some guy introduced a bunch of males from different tanks/clans together by doing the 'bath method' lol.. his post should still be up.
If I had a 55 gallon tank.. I would want it full of gerbils too. lol=P (stupid things are so expensive though!)

I actually got a REALLY good deal on this tank, it was only $160 for it which for a 55 gallon is AMAZING!! Corbrets has good deals on just the tanks alone. But my thing is, are abby and tessa going to be ok with her because its only about a 3 week difference between the new gerbil and these two girls, AND abby and tessa have always been together so that might lead to segregation of the new gerbil. All my gerbils I guess are still pups, cause the one at the store is about 6 weeks old, where as Abby and Tessa are about 9 weeks, I'm estimating. Tessa is definately the dominate one. Would split cage work do you think? how do I do that? and are the girls just gonna get even more mad cause I took away part of their home and some of their toys? It just that I checked in today and saw that its still there all alone!! do you think that because of their age its a lost hope?

Did you get it or is it still at the store? I'm confused. So your gerbils are 9 weeks old and you're sure the lone one is about 6? It doesn't matter how old your gerbils are or the age difference. The new gerbil has to be a pup. If it's 5-6 weeks (maybe 7) then you have a good chance of being able to introduce her without a split cage. At that age they haven't hit sexual maturity yet so there isn't anything to fight over. My gerbil was about 8 months old when I put her and two 4-5week old pups in with her. lol I've been wanting to go back to the petshop to get the nutmeg pup they had. (it wasn't alone though)I wanted to mix my clan up a bit cause I have all agoutis. Probably be gone by the time I Get up there.

If the pup is still very young (5-8 weeks old) than you might have a chanche that it will work! Older than that will most likely give problems! However keep always in mind that it is possible that you will fail, so that the lonely one will need a seperate cage and new cage mate.

It is still at the store but I"m thinking on saturday on my day off if I go there and its still alone then I"m definately snatching it and giving it a try, ,worse comes to worse, I'll split cage it and maybe just keep it split and find another lonely one right?? or maybe I"m just in dream land... I just feel so bad for it....

Oh well, if the one lonely one at the store is only 6 weeks old then maybe you have a chance of introducing her successfully to A&T. But don't wait too long!!

Ummm if you're going to get her, you should just do it asap since the longer a gerbil is alone, the harder it can* be to put them with others.

They had a black male, about 6 weeks old alone in the cage and I couldn't take it because I had way too much to do today. Hmm. Anyone know how to sneak a gerbil home? Next time I'll need a ride and my mom would have to take me and there is no way in hell she'll let me buy another animal. lol I was actually thinking of going in and buying it and putting it in my pocket (lol Adidas Swishie/Windbreaker pants..big enough!) for the 15minute ride home..lmao. Maybe my jacket pocket ... it'll have to rain though cause I'll look stupid wearing a jacket in this weather. But then it would dig in my pocket and I'd get caught...So would need something small and soundproof! haha I'm an idiot. ;D But that poor gerbil. I don't even want to know what the gerbil breeding farm does with the FEMALES Since they only sell males.
