How to Sex your Gerbil

Another good way of telling the difference is that male pups have a much larger scent gland compared to a female. Look at the pics of the 10 and 12 day old pups in this thread - you will see what I mean.

Here's a couple of pics of my pups at 10 days old.

MALE - here you can see the gap between genitals and anus and also the large scent gland.


FEMALE - you can see the nipples under the arms and the smaller scent gland (the genitals aren't so easy to see in this pic).

I got a new gerbil today!! Total cutie! I'm almost positive that its a female but what's throwing me off is that the genitals seem to be a bit dark for an argente. Not sure how old it is. I got it from the petshop and I'm guessing between 6-10 weeks old.

Female or late-blooming male? Please help. Thanks ;D

[To sex them], if you aren't able to hold them yet, let them walk into a glass jar and look underneath. If you're still unsure, try to take a photo and post it.

This is what a male gerbil looks like:


You can see that the gap between the urethra (the bump near the top) and the anus is very large. He has a large bulge which is his testicles (easier seen side on). And there's no opening below the urethra.

And this is a female:


On the female, you can see the urethra (the pink bump) and the anus are much closer together. You can't see it well on the photo, but if you look closely females also have an opening just below the urethra. This is the vaginal opening. It can enlarge when they're in heat. And of course a female will never have testicles.
