I have a piece of Mopani wood in my tank, The type you get for fish tanks the gerbils climb on it but don't really chew it. They only stripped the bark of the apple branches but it made their coats really shiny.
What do you guys think about mopani? Does anyone else use it.

Hey there shrimply,
I have never heard of it. Do you know if they have to *treat* the wood or *process* it? It sounds really interesting. Do you have pictures?

unsalted or unflavoured peanuts are fine for gerbies but only in small amounts, otherwise they can get fat ;D

I buy dried blueberries and strawberries for treats... That way they don't spoil, and they aren't sweetened, etc... Most of my gerbil treats come from the organic health food isle... My gerbils eat better than I do!!!

I have given pomegranite twice as a treat; each gerbil gets one seed "sac." They loved it... just like every other edible item in the world <sigh>. I don't think it's unsafe.

could anyone expand more about the avocado thing? I had thought, that it was just avocado skin that was toxic, and not the avocado itself. ( at least thats the case with rats). Its got me slightly worried, as ive often fed mine avocado ( pretty much once a week for the last 5 years!) - as it seem to be one of there very favourite foods.

I don't know about avocado here's a list of hamster can and can't have foods www.petwebsite.com/fruit.htmthe gerbil list is much more limited www.petwebsite.com/gerbil_fruit.htmwww.petwebsite.com/gerbil_wild.htmwww.petwebsite.com/gerbil_othertreats.htmEddie at www.gerbilshowsuk.org is busy writing new articles for his website and a little bird tells me that there will be some detailed articles on gerbil nutrition. I for one am looking forward to reading them. My gerbils get Gerri Gerbil mixed with Raspberry Hamster Supreme. I mix whole grains in for variety or rolled (porridge, Quaker) oats. Their favourite veggies are cauliflower and especially broccoli. I have also given grapes, apple, carrot, cucumber, small quantities of lettuce, cabbage, brussle sprouts, sprouted seeds, plum, tomato (not popular), fresh figs, banana (they prefer dried but rasperry hamster has these in anyway), dried papaya, dried coconut etc. special treats of cracked whole nuts always go down well. Protein supplements I have used include nuts, mealworms (some risk of salmonella etc), cat food, insectivorous bird food, egg biscuits, egg food, dried insects. I buy hard dog biscuits (dentarusks are expecially good) to keep teeth trim. I only use vitamin supplements if they seem under the weather or for sick/injured gerbils. Pro-vitamins help recovery after anti-biotics. Mine love hamster milk and yoghurt drops. Chocolate is not suitable for gerbils (or any animals) as it contains theobromine which is toxic too many animals. It takes a very little theobromine (relaively) to kill a dog, a lot to kill a human. Rodents are somewhere in the middle but of course are also much smaller. Milk should only be given to adult gerbils rarely and in small quantities as they are lactose intolerant (info from Eddie ....see above link where there will be much more detail on these soon).

Hello, so the list says dog biscuits. Could anybody tell me what kind? I went to a store and there's dozens of different ones, could anybody tell me of the brand "pedigre", or "purina" a type that would be good?. Thanks!.

I like giving mine Peanut butter dog cookies, and any higher premium chicken/beef/lamb ones. Nothing chewy though.

Hey Doom, Just bought a packet of Pedigree Denta Rask's (for small dogs), bunged one in the tank this afternoon - and they are LOVING IT!!!!!! - Even fighting over it lol So funny to watch them hunkered up together trying to get to it! Is it OK to leave it in the tank, or should I take it out after a few hours and put it back in a few days? Caroline
