Hi Caroline I was in P@H today when I remembered your post so got my gang some rasks. They seem to enjoy them too, I've left them in the tank though as they don't seem too obsessed with them lol

I just realised (didn't read it fully before) that coltsfoot is on the list. I am sure I remember that coltsfoot in quantity is bad for any animal.

I'm very sorry for my poor English but what is "coltsfoot". Why nobody mentions sunflower seeds? Is it so obvious that needs no mentioning? Or nobody treats their gerbils to this? How about walnut? They do love it.

Coltsfoot ( Tussilago farfara is a small yellow flower of meadow and grass verge. It has tiny 'scales' up it's stem. (from www.northamptonshirewildlife.co.uk/gallery.htm#Flowers(Europe) ) Also see: coltsfoot Perennial plant belonging to the daisy family. The single yellow flower heads have many narrow rays (not petals), and the stems have large purplish scales. The large leaf, up to 22 cm/9 in across, is shaped like a horse's foot and gives the plant its name. Coltsfoot grows in Europe, northern Asia, and North Africa, often on bare ground and in waste places, and has been introduced to North America. It was formerly used in medicine. (Tussilago farfara, family Compositae.) © From the Hutchinson Encyclopaedia. Sunflower seeds are great but not too many as they are fattening!!! Walnuts I crack the shells but do not open so that the gerbils can smell the meat and spend time gettign to it.

Well, that's what i usually do. The seeds are undisputably great. All of my rodents adore them. But, ah! yes, they are fattening... we know

Hey there. I was linked to this list on a LJ gerbil group. Nice list. There are a couple of things I have questions about--
breads/processed grains. Now, I don't know how size effects this, but aren't the ground grains bad for the average mamilian digestive tract? I mean, I know that human beings have the ability to process such finly ground things, and I know that horses get impacted bowels and colic from such things. Neither of these are quiet the same size as a gerbil, and I'm wondering if its really that ok for them?
Second, has anybody else had a gerbil decide to try shrimp? (Not much choice involved on my husband's part, who's shrimp got stolen. Gerbils were out for free time, and Onieros was curious... aparently. Made quite a jump for it anyhow.) Didn't seem to harm the little guy, but... well, I'm wondering if anyone else has seen that sort of thing.

I've heard some almonds are bad, due to the acid in them, can anyone confirm? Also some of you mentioned dog biscuits, just be aware some contain onion and garlic.
BTW, I feed my hamsters plain Kashi cereal, rolled oats, lentils, buckwheat, wheatgerm and millet along with their mix, would it be okay to do the same with the gerbils?

Millet can make gerbils hyper..it is a gerbil stimulant so be aware of that. It is very good for their coats though, mine get millet leading up to shows (just an inch a week) and golden linseed too (but that is expensive).

I don't see anything on the list about spinach leaves. Is spinach alright or not?

Done Try to keep on topic though people; won't be handy to newbies if they have to read ten pages of disputes!
