They actually cook it to make it last longer, or something like that. It destroys the nutrients, so I'd forgo it.

LOL this is funny i buy the gerbils one of those Ka-Bobs for christmas and get all the cool chew stuff for it( you know the ones you hang in the cage.) The funny thing is salt ever touches it and pepper is more interested in trying to chew the metal bell off than she is in chewing on the stuff i put on it! -mike Maybe they'll get some fresh pine apple in the summer!

My gerbils always do that if i buy them a treat there more interested in the thing that comes with the treat like a stick or something than the actuall treat they do get round to the trea but not at first.

Can gerbils eat oatmeal? Just plain oatmeal, I had some and wondered if it would be okay to eat.

Yes. I mix dry oatmeal into my food. They seem to really like it. I've fed some wet oatmeal, but not very much. It's wet, and any wet foods can always cause loose poops- which is never a good thing.

my lad bought the gerbies the 'pets at home' dried fruit mix. I know the raisins are ok, but are the honey coated dried banana pieces, dried pineapple or the dried papaya. Just says on the packet that its suitable as a treat (also as a supplement) for small animals. So i wasnt happy when he just fed them it (didnt make the pieces smaller either) before id had a chance to look at the list, make sure everything was ok

I wonder if fresh cooked popcorn is alright my gerbils seem to love it. So long as its plain no sugar or salt ;D Regarding the not drinking, are you sre the gerb isn't? You could try half a grape or a peeled slice of apple, but fruit and veg should only be given at the most once per week and a small portion.

I totally agree. Portions is the key here. My gerbils hardly EVER get fresh foods. Just when ill, or traveling, or when I make banana chips! But just think of how big an apple is to you- and think of how big it is to them. What happens usually if you eat like 3 or 5 apples?? Icky. Now remember that gerbils are WAY smaller than you, so something around the size of a little pea or one grain of corn is about the size of an apple to us.

Thanks so much for the advise. I will give lettuce once a week in small portion. I will also pay more attention on if the gerbils are drinking there water:)

Does anyone else give their gerbils Melon seeds (from Honeydew type melons) as a treat? I've been doing this for years and they love them.
Gerbils do seem to like Spinach, Rocket, banana (fresh and dried), dried mango, dried papaya and dried pineapple.
I wouldn't recommend covering things in Honey (mainly because of how fattening it is). Also if buying Human dried papaya mixes, be careful and make sure they don't have a dusting of icing sugar on them as many of them do and its not always obvious.
