This list is dumb.
Bread?
Where is the common sense? Do you really think gerbils in the wild are going to go out and gather supplies such as flour, yeast, and find an oven to bake themselves a loaf of bread? Seriously now, get real.
Dog bisquits? Do you read the ingredients on those things? I don't even feed those things to my dogs. Because dogs aren't going to gather grains either and bake them into cute little shapes.
In the housing section, all you people do is talk about their natural habitats and trying to imitate their natural habitats as close as possible and give them burrowing and sand etc. Yet, you want to feed them breads and cereals and other ridiculous things.
Scrambled eggs? LOL. *gives gerbil a frying pan*

I suppose most of us want to give them new foods that won't kill them to give them something new and interesting for the day. All of us know perfectly well that no gerbil in the wild is going to go make itself bread or biscuits, but because they are captive and some people who may not know much about gerbils will try and feed their pet something new. It could save a gerbil's life to have a list like this where certain foods are barred from consumption. The purpose it not just new foods they can eat for fun, but also foods not to be fed to the gerbil. I think it was more in the interest of stimulation in a safe way, rather than feeding them outrageous, foreign things.

I would like to start giving my gerbils a home made food mix. What would be safe to do for them? Is it safe to switch gerbils from a store food to home made food...how slowly should I do it? If there are babies in the cage should I only have certain food in there and not others? What age is it safe to have regular foods with the babies?

What about cat biscuits? Mine love them and there doesn't seem to be any obvious effects if they're bad for their health.

Well I have continued to give my two gerbils Whiskas cat biscuits and they enjoyed eating them. They just tend to lose interest if they are given too much.

This list has been REALLY helpful. I just recently bought my little guys and they haven't really been interested in the sunflower seeds and bits of cheese. Maybe this will help them settle in and love their new mommy lol. They better love their new mommy if they saw how much money I'm about to spend on them for their tank!

I'd keep away from the cheese-- lactose intolerance is NOT fun!

Ok, so not even a tiny tear off of it is ok? Just want to make sure I don't hurt the little guys.

i don't think mine know how to eat sunflower seeds. My last gerbil figured it out pretty quickly HE LOVED THEM! These just looked at it.. tried to bite it, missed and got my finger. That's ok though... they didn't mean to.
