Oh, I tought the wheel is just fine, like the man from the pet store said. At my local pet stores I didn’t find a large plastic wheel so that means I have to order it online. I’ll let u know more about it in the morning:))

Yeah, unfortunately lots of pet shops say that things are fine when they aren't. That's great update us soon Oh also, you can get purely metal wheels like Mark has without any mesh/gaps (although they may not be available where you are) or wooden wheels like I have. Both are great options too.

Yea true, solid wheels are the key Some people use hard plastic wheels too (Silent spinners IIRC), but that only works if the gerbils don't attack them too much!

So I looked for wooden wheels and I found something but it’s out of stock so I’ll wait. I also think about order from Amazon but it will arrive in about three months sooo... I took a photo with a pup yesterday but I was kind of busy trying to catch an argente pup who jumped out my hands and hid under the refrigerator:(( It took a hour and a half to get him out (trust me, it was hard) Tokyo’s pups—-3 weeks and 5 days (started eating and dig all day long:)) ibb.co/9qvT6RVibb.co/PmZLM4Tibb.co/JCSsQ5k

So cute! Oh I forgot to mention something about wooden wheels , avoid the ones with steps inside them (like this), they have caused injuries too

I didn't know that, thanks for saying Mark (even though it wasn't to me!). Mine is luckily flat , and lined with cork so they can still grip well/ won't slip.

No worries, I remember someone, somewhere, posting a photo of the aftermath when their Hamster (I think) had run on it on one particular night, their was a thin spattering of blood going around the wheel! I think it may have been the site lilyanddaisy linked to re a wood shavings article. tokyoandhazel Forgot to say, nightmare on the escapee! Glad you got him back

Oh my! I’ll consider that! Thank God I got the pup out of there. They are truly not such domestic animals or it really is normal to jump out of your hand:))

Oh yea, they certainly can! Blake jumped out of my hand once, we were near the cage and he wanted to get back (my boys don't like to be held ), so he made a leap for the cage, but I think he slipped on my sleeve, and so landed on the floor! I was shocked for a second (so was he luckily! lol), then quickly tried to pick him up (without moving so quick I'd scare him!), I got him in my hands but he climbed straight out and went under the cupboard! (now I was really worried as I can't move that) Then I remembered the tube trick, I grabbed a spare poster tube, put it next to the cupboard, encouraged him out and he went into it, phew!

You were really lucky with Blake, the pups are so fast. Sometimes they are so annoying cause they make such a mess with the sand:)) Posting lately:))

I would get rid of that wheel sooner rather than later. Pups with tiny paws are at particularly high risk of injury from getting a limb stuck in that mesh. They will do fine without a wheel while you wait to get a new one.
And like tanzanyte said, you really need to resign yourself to keeping Tokyo and Hazel apart forever. They will have certainly forgotten that they were ever friends at this point. And now that they have both been mothers, they will not settle back into their old relationship. They have built in friends now with their daughters. It could takes weeks of a split cage to introduce them again and it might not even be successful. Gerbils don't think like people...they are very territorial and they will kill a gerbil that they identify as an intruder.
The pictures are super fun, I've enjoyed following your adventures in baby gerbils!

Gorgeous What sand is that in the sandbath? (can't help you with the belly sniffing question I'm afraid, although that is where their scent gland is.)
