Thanks for your thoughts, that was very interesting.
So there might be new gerbils for them, probably pups, in the near future. I can't wait to follow this new adventure, although I do not feel confident about the outcome because of their history. Well, we'll see.
I will post a new thread about the topic of introducing gerbils to a pup, which is a question that keeps haunting me, and I would like to see answers in general. And now Astra and Twiglet might get a baby friend and we don't know whether it will work.
Keep us updated!

We do quite often see that gerbils who don't get on with each other, then do get on with other gerbils! Odd! LilyandDaisy Sorry to hear that Astra and Twiglet have declanned , but at least you caught it before any real harm happened. You gave them every chance! Gerbils are funny (complicated) sometimes! As you know Avon and Blake declanned in a bloody fashion, and yet leaved quite happily side by side in a permanent split just hours after that! Yet your girls just had a scuffle and one is still furious with the other!

Today I collected two very young pups from Gerbil and Rodent Rescue. Astra and Twiglet have gone into split tanks with a pup each. So far, Astra's behaviour has been really good. She seems to have a good balance of being politely and gently interested in the pup, but also not overly bothered, and having more important things to think about, like shredding cardboard. Twiglet's been a bit stressed and is scent marking a lot but nothing worrisome at this stage. Weirdly, I haven't seen Astra scent mark at all. She's never been much of a scent marker, which is surprising given her history. While I was at the rescue, I also picked up the two brothers of my pups, who I'm going to be introducing to somebody else's lone male on their behalf. Here they are playing on a wheel while they wait for their new tankmate to arrive. So it's a bit hectic with three split tanks set up!

Aww lovely I see you've gone for double agouti too, good luck telling those 2 apart! , took me about year to find something to tell my 2 apart! I didn't have any choice when it came to which pups to adopt, but in many ways it would have made more sense to put the lighter pup with Twiglet and the agouti with Astra. However, I thought it would be cute to have two agoutis together. I think the lighter pup is going to be a polar fox, and I also thought a grey agouti and polar fox would look great together. The agouti pup should be smaller than Twiglet for quite a while yet, maybe forever, so there's that. This video is the first time Twiglet and her pup met, when I put them in the split. There was a little bit of aggression but she calmed down quickly. I don't have a video of Astra meeting her pup, but she was fine from the start. Here is the moment I removed the divider and introduced Astra and her pup, which was the least eventful intro ever. Twiglet's introduction was similarly uneventful. Ah yea, different size will make it easy to tell them apart, at first at least And yes that grooming video is very cute, and both pups are very cute too (Btw, if you want more widespread views, you could add gerbils into the title of the 1st, 3rd & 4th videos).

Ah yea, different size will make it easy to tell them apart, at first at least I've had my first moment of mixing them up. It was quite dim and I was looking into the enclosure thinking I was looking at Peanut. I thought: wow you've really grown! Oh no wait, that's Twiglet, nevermind!

Heheh , it's a pity we can't painlessly put a small tattoo or something on top of one!

Love the video's, although I am sorry it came to a split with Astra and Twiglet. They look very settled with their new pups already. I definitely don't envy you telling them apart if you have 2 agoutis and 2 grey's. I struggled with a slate and black in dull lighting and there was a size difference as adults. Although to be fair I can struggle with Squirrel and Smudge when the lighting is bad, unless it's their tail end and then I'm ok.
