J: Ten and Six. The ten year old is the worst. Lyd: Yeah. He seems to be doing alot better! He's just sleeping alot. Don't worry about the sleeping, far better that he sleeps than tries to do too much .As long as he's still eating etc.,and managing to be as comfortable as possible. Lyd

He went to the vet today, and she's given us the all-clear to begin re-socializing them.... now to get back to re-socializing... how shall I do it? It was hard enough socializing them in the first place!

split cage Ryan and lots of patience I just read the thread from the beginning and was sorry to read about the other gerbil. Gerbils are very nosy and can easily get into trouble (one of mine got behind the tumble drier and because we didn't know he'd got as far as the kitchen was very hungry, thirsty and dusty by the time we got to him). Good lcuk reuniting your gerbils. TBH I would not have separated them in the first place ss gerbils (in the same colony) will look after each other. Try the split cage, be patient and I hope all goes well.

Paws,How long have they been separated ? If it isn't long, you could see how they react to each other,in neutral territory (not in their cages). If they remember each other, and are pleased to see each other,no need to reintroduce.
Otherwise,do what Doom suggests, put a divider in their cage, keep changing their bedding over, once there are no hostilities through the divide, you can try removing it.Keep them supervised thopugh, until you are sure they are o.k. together.

NO NO NO (gosh that's a loud voice ;D ) I wrote it the wrong way. I mean de-scaring them of human beings. They have been abused and are very scared now. Thanx for all the split cages stuff though! Then I can return to that if I ever get another gerbil. (which I hope I do! )

Yes, I have a 10 and 11 year old, they are excellent with the gerbils but I have taught them the correct handling procedure. They are pros now. All the same when their friends come by I keep a close eye on things. Its a great opportunity to teach the kids about how to handle and treat animals. So many kids these days aren't allowed to have any, or have allergies, etc. Kids love coming over here. ;D

wellll.. I guess I could be being a bit hard on them, but I'm twelve, and the oldest is only two years younger than me. I guess their mum didnt teach them to handle them correctly, but I did try to gently teach them, and have never lost my temper with them.

too true at the London Championship show I was in charge of selling and I spent a lot of time introducing children to the gerbils including some very young ones. All where wonderful and the gerbils seemed to enjoy the experience too As you can see with supervision it can be a wonderful experience My own 10 year old shows her gerbils and got Best In Show at Southsea!!!

I'm not a member of the NGS, but as you say there, doomgerbiluk, there are young responsible people. I guess you could call me one of them, since I am only 13.

Yes Ryan, you are very responsible.
I also have two children one is 2 1/2 and the other one is 4 1/2. They are great with the gerbils. They are very gentle and need only little reminders. The learn quickly and are really sensitive kids. They love playing with them and feeding them grasshoppers and sunflower seeds. The gerbils also respond well to them. The gerbils run all over them when they are sitting in the enclosure.
I have my gerbils in the living room and many times, I feel like a humane education instructor and promoter!! It is great opportunity to show them and talk about the gerbils.
