Hi tinyweasel, this is a link from egerbil.com on how to make a sand playground, and it has the pictures. I believe before these pictures expired, they were the same pictures from the link, and the same directions. www.egerbil.com/playground.htmlBy the way, egerbil has lots of other neat Do It Yourselves, if you want to take a look and are into making things.

Ok so I had always wanted to make one of these for my gerbils but they passed away before I ever got around to it. I currently have two roborovski dwarf hamsters (who also originate from Mongolia and love sand). I also recently bought them a cage (an Ikea Detolf shelf converted into a tank) and it's massive. So I was looking around for something to fill it with. Then I remembered this and thought it might be a good idea. I've read through all of the pages and I noticed that it is not recommended for in-cage use. But what about for a rodent that isn't as big of a chewer as gerbils (thus not allowing access to the tape), all cardboard instead of plastic, newspaper with nontoxic ink, non-toxic glue (or the flour mixture) and non-toxic and child-safe paint? What do you think? I think it would be a great way for my to keep the shavings and sand from mixing, it will look nice and they'll love it! If I used all cardboard then I also assume that I would have to replace it from time to time since I cannot clean it out.... though (throwing ideas out here) if I was careful with the plastic then I could make some windows and doors for my to clean from. I don't know, I'll figure it out I suppose and I'll share pictures when I'm done!

I just wanted to tell you that I LOVE this idea! I found this thread two days ago and today I started on a small version, just to try it out. I'm currently waiting for it to dry, tomorrow I'm going to put another layer of glue (I used the home-made version) on and of course sand My playground consists of one "cave" (a strawberry box) and two entrances. Since I used a low box (like 5 cm high or two inches ) with a lid with a hole as a base, I could make sort of a crater, which unfortunately you can't see very well on this picture. I'm going to fill it up with an extra deep layer of sand. I posted this on a Swedish forum and everyone loved it there as well! Just thought you'd want to know that there'll probably be a bunch of Swedish people using your instructions for this awesome playground! ^^ Attachments:

Hello everyone! (I'm trying to stop saying "guys" as one of my professors told me I'm being sexist) I know this thread hasn't been posted in in a while but I am currently constructing my own sand playground. It's sort of small, since I am putting it in a 58 quart/ 55 liter container. I just wanted to post some construction pics to see what all of you think of it so far ^^ Corner view. You can't see it from the outside but the purple box has a tiny ladder that I made that leads up to the oreo box on top of it. I guess this is a side view. The clear tunnel is an old soda bottle that I washed and cut. I covered the ends thoroughly with tape to make sure they can't cut anyone. This is more less the "front". Both of the main "burrows" have entrances and a tunnel connecting them. That's how it looks for now. Not sure how much more work I can do today. I have a slight allergy to adhesives such as tape so the tips of my fingers are sort of burning and itching ><

Looks great so far If you have an allergy to the tape, try using rubber gloves. I know it may not be comffy and easy to work with but your fingertips would not have that burning sensation afterwards
